James Richard Zehner, 85, of Monterey, passed away on November 11, 2017 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Culver, IN.
Jim was born on May 8, 1932 in Pulaski County to August and Anna (Shorter) Zehner. He attended St. Anne Catholic School and then
Monterey High School, graduating from there in 1950. During the summer months Jim worked at the Culver Military Academy and
drove a milk truck for his uncle, Tony Zehner. He bought his first bicycle while in school, getting the money to purchase the bike from
Billy (William) Keitzer. To pay him back, Jim mowed Billy’s lawn until the bike was paid for in full. When Jim purchase his first car, a
1946 Chevrolet, he again got the money from Billy Keitzer, making payments until the car was paid for in full.
After graduation, Jim went to work at Bendix Corp. in South Bend. He married Delores Loretta Shideler in 1952. Together they
raised 7 children: Richard Anthony (Vicki), Bonnie Irene (Tom) Mary Margaret (Bob), Debra Jean, Sharon Ann, Robin Renee (Bob),
and Eric Charles.
When Jim’s father died he bought the family business from his mother and worked the business as well as worked at Bendix until he
hurt his back and went on sick leave. He then was in politics and was the Democrat Precinct Committeeman for 30 years. Jim then
served as Tippecanoe Township Trustee for 8 years. He was the last trustee to hire the custodians, cooks, teachers, and bus drivers.
He also paid their salaries. Jim was Town Marshall for 15 years, being the last to serve as Town Marshall of Monterey. He was also a
school bus driver. Jim was on the County Council for 16 years, being President for 2 years. He was Vice Chairman of the Democrat
party in Pulaski Co. for 4 years and Treasurer for 4 years.
Jim was on the Monterey Volunteer Fire Dept. for 50 years, being Fire Chief for 15 years. He belonged to the Monterey Lions Club for
25 years and the Knights of Columbus for 20 years. He was a faithful member of St. Anne Catholic Church all his life, serving on the
Parish Council for 8 years. He was also a member of the Monterey Club and enjoyed many years of drinking morning coffee with them
at the Corner Tavern.
Jim returned to work at Bendix in 1983 and worked there until 1988 when he retired. He then sold the business, Zehner Excavating, to
his son Richard, who changed the name to Zehner & Sons as he had 3 sons and a daughter.
Jim and Delores enjoyed the winter months in Florida for many years.
Jim is survived by his wife Delores of Monterey, IN; son Richard (Vicki) Zehner of Monterey, IN; daughters Bonnie (Tom) Young of
Decatur, AL, Mary (Bob) Kornock of Lancaster, CA, Robin (Bob) Harden of Wabash, IN; brother Don (Ruth) Zehner of Monterey, IN;
and sister Mary (Joe) Penska of Winamac, IN; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughters Debra and Sharon, son Eric, a brother, and a sister.
A time of visitation with the family will be held at the Odom Funeral Home on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 2:00 – 8:00 pm with a
Spiritual Wake at 7:30 followed by the Rosary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 at St. Anne
Catholic Church, Monterey, at 11:00 am with Father Michael McKinney officiating. Burial will follow in St. Anne Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Anne Catholic Church or the Monterey Fire Dept. in Jim’s memory.
