Donald E. Shock, 79, of Culver, passed away on Sat., May 6, 2017, at his home.
Don was born to the late Howard and Mildred (Birk) Shock on July 4, 1937 in Plymouth, Indiana. He grew up in
the Hibbard area just outside of Culver.
After joining the US Navy, Don married the love of his life Opal Voreis, on December 25, 1955. When his
service ended he returned home and decided to enter barber school. During this time, Don and Opal began
their family and raised 3 children. He was a barber in Marshall County for 55 years. He barbered along side his
uncle in Burr Oak. Don then went to Culver Military Academy to act as barber there for 18 years. He later left
there to barber, and eventually own, Dick’s Barber Shop in Plymouth for 10 years. Following his semi-retirement,
Don still worked part-time.
Don loved his family and spending time with them. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and had a passion for planting
flowers and gardening. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, and the Fraternal Order of Moose
Lodge in Plymouth.
He is survived by his true love, Opal Justice of Culver; son Mike Shock of Culver; daughters Debbie Howard of
Plymouth and Donna (Kevin) Hartmann of Star City; brother Dennis Shock of Carmel, IN; grandchildren Jennifer
(Shane) Gurtner, Ashley (Doug) Metzger, Brittany (Travis) Stepp, Ryan (Debbie) Jones, Cory Shock, Libby
Shock, Tim Beason, and Katy Beason; and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents
and sister Mary Ann Bush. Don being a disabled veteran his family would like memorials be given to the
Disabled American Veterans in his memory.
A private service will be held at a later date.
