|Elisabeth B. Davis
July 21, 1917 - September 15, 2018
Elisabeth B. Davis, 101, of Culver, passed away on September 15, 2018, at the home of her daughter in Knox, where she had
been residing for the past year.
Elisabeth was born on July 21, 1917, the youngest of three children born to Jesse and Pearl (Hatten) Zechiel, in a home near
Poplar Grove United Methodist Church. She lived in the Culver area her entire life.
Elisabeth went to school at Culver and graduated in 1935. She began her working career at the Culver Academies on March 15,
1936. Her first position was in the Admissions Office. She then started working in the Superintendent's office, or the Head of
Schools office, as it is called today. She worked there up to the week she turned 100 years old. She became well-known in 2016
when the story of her 80 years of employment at the Culver Academies went "viral". In the summer of 2017, she was honored to
receive the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from Governor Eric Holcomb at the Academy.
Elisabeth met her husband, Eldon Davis, while they both were at Culver High School. They were married on June 30, 1945. They
had two children, Paul and Eldonna. They purchased a farm in Fulton County where she lived until July 17, 2017. Elisabeth and
Eldon farmed and milked Holstein cows. She would help her husband on the farm by taking care of the cows and calves before
and after her job at the Academy. He also chopped all of the hay in the summer. She always had a huge garden and enjoyed
mowing her big yard with a push mower (with a bagger)!
She started attending the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church when she married Eldon. Before that she attended and was a lifetime
member of the former Burr Oak Church of God. While attending Mt. Hope, she taught Sunday school class, led the singing at
Vacation Bible School, cleaned the church, and was the church pianist up to the week she turned 100. Elisabeth played the piano
at church, weddings, funerals, and family get-togethers, along with Eldon, who had a wonderful singing voice. She always said it
was because of God's help that she was able to live a long life.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son Paul (Cathy) Davis of Culver; daughter Eldonna (Mike) Risner of Knox; grandchildren
Justin Davis of Lexington, Kentucky, Brandon Davis of Knox, Clint (Shannon) Risner of Knox; Brent (Beth) Risner of Knox, Keith
(Ashley) Risner of Monterey, and Kurt (Crystal) Risner of Knox; great grandchildren Matthew and Michael Davis, and Colton,
Kadon, Kindall, Caysen, Weston, and Asher Risner; and step-great grandchildren Kannen, Gavin, and Reese Martinez.
She was preceded in death by her husband Eldon, parents Jesse and Pearl, brother Ferris Zechiel, and sister Marguerite Zechiel.
A time of visitation with the family will be held at the Odom Funeral Home, Culver, Indiana on Thursday, September 20, 2018, from
4:00 - 8:00 PM EST. A memorial service will be held on Firday, September 21, 2018 at the Culver Academies Memorial Chapel
at 1:00 PM EST with visitation from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will follow in the Culver Masonic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Hope United Methodist Church or to the Atlanta Bible College.
